Study with Five Sentences 2023. 9. 5. 00:09Researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery in southern Greece, unearthing the country's oldest archaeological site dating back to 700,000 years ago, linked to modern humans' hominin ancestors. This discovery pushes the dawn of Greek archaeology back my up to a quarter-million years. The site, located in an open coal mine near Megalopolis, was one five investigated during a five-year project by an international team of experts. It contains rough stone tools from the Lower Palaeolithic period and the remains of extinct species like giant deer, elephants, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, and a macaque monkey. The tools, possibly made by Homo antecessor, signify the oldest known hominin presence in Greece, shedding light on early human migration to Europe and human evolution.
